The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic form of the heartburn medication Nexium® to treat the condition.
The generic drug, marketed under the brand name Prilosec® was approved by the FDA in the United States in July 2000.
The generic is the same drug that was manufactured by AstraZeneca and marketed under the name Nexium, and was approved by the FDA in August 2000.
The generic is a brand name for omeprazole, a drug used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) that is also used to treat peptic ulcers. Prilosec® is the brand name for esomeprazole.
The drug is available as a capsule form.

in St. Louis, said he had no idea Wednesday what he was buying for the two drugs. The price of each is based on a month’s supply of the two drugs at a savings of $2, or $1.04.
“I am going to call it a day,” said Smith, who said he would not be buying any more Nexium, but would instead be buying 20 mg tablets. “It’s not something you would get at Walgreens.”
Smith said the price of Nexium would be $849 for a month’s supply, and prices for the generic substitute, which is not currently under review, would be $2, or $1.04.
Smith said that because most people don’t really have a problem with the generic versions of the drugs, the savings could be as much as or more than $1 per tablet. In addition, the savings are usually much higher if you’re taking a prescription drug that requires a higher dosage of the drugs.
